Which medications are prescribed?

How effective are these medications?
In clinical trials, adults taking semaglutide 2.4 mg alongside diet and exercise lost an average of 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks (STEP 1, New England Journal of Medicine, 2021), and adults taking tirzepatide 15 mg lost an average of 20.9% over 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1, New England Journal of Medicine, 2022). Those are trial averages, not a promise: individual results vary, some people lose noticeably less, and a provider decides whether treatment is appropriate for you at all.
What are the potential side effects?
The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting. Most are mild and improve over time. Your provider will review your health history and current medications, weigh the risks for your situation, and will not prescribe if treatment is not appropriate for you.
