Blisovi-Fe 1/20

Blisovi-Fe 1/20 is a prescription birth control pill used to help prevent pregnancy. It is a combined oral contraceptive containing norethindrone acetate 1 mg, a progestin, and ethinyl estradiol 0.02 mg, an estrogen. It is a generic for Loestrin Fe 1/20.

• Blisovi-Fe 1/20 mainly works by preventing ovulation.
• It also changes cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
• Each pack contains 21 active hormonal tablets followed by 7 brown non-hormonal reminder tablets.
• The brown tablets contain ferrous fumarate but are not intended to treat iron deficiency or anemia.
• Blisovi-Fe 1/20 does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.

Take one Blisovi-Fe 1/20 tablet by mouth every day at about the same time, following the order shown on the blister pack. After taking the 21 active yellow tablets and 7 brown reminder tablets, start the next pack without taking a break.

• Taking the active pills consistently is important for pregnancy protection.
• The 7 brown tablets do not contain birth control hormones.
• Missing an active pill may reduce pregnancy protection, depending on how many pills were missed and when.
• Special instructions apply if you miss pills, vomit, have diarrhea, or switch from another birth control method.

Possible side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, spotting or changes in menstrual bleeding, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, and mood changes. Some people may also have a lighter period or occasionally miss a period. Not everyone experiences the same effects, and this is not a complete list.

• Combined birth control pills can increase the risk of serious blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.
• Seek urgent medical care for severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, severe calf pain, sudden vision loss, or sudden weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking.
• Contact your healthcare provider if you develop significant new or worsening headaches or other concerning symptoms.
• People over age 35 who smoke cigarettes should not use Blisovi-Fe 1/20 because smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.

Blisovi-Fe 1/20 requires a prescription, and your provider should review your health history before prescribing it. Tell them if you smoke or have a history of blood clots, stroke, heart problems, migraines, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, breast cancer, depression, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Also mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent childbirth, upcoming major surgery, or long periods of limited movement. Share all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements you take so your provider can decide whether Blisovi-Fe 1/20 is appropriate for you.

Each pack includes 7 brown tablets after the 21 active birth control pills. These brown tablets do not contain contraceptive hormones. They contain ferrous fumarate and are included to help you stay in the habit of taking one tablet every day throughout the 28-day pack. According to the prescribing information, the iron in these reminder tablets does not provide a therapeutic benefit. They should not be considered treatment for iron deficiency or anemia or used in place of an iron supplement recommended by your healthcare provider.

What to do depends on how many active yellow pills you missed and where you are in your pack. Missing one active pill is handled differently from missing two or more, and backup contraception may be needed in some situations. Follow the missed-pill instructions in the Patient Information that comes with your medication. If you are unsure, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Missing a brown reminder pill is different from missing an active hormonal pill. Throw away the missed brown tablet and continue taking the remaining tablets on schedule. Missing a brown tablet does not require backup birth control because these tablets do not contain contraceptive hormones. Be sure to start your next pack on time after finishing the reminder-tablet portion of your current pack.

Vomiting or diarrhea may affect how reliably an active pill is absorbed and could reduce pregnancy protection. The Patient Information recommends using backup contraception in this situation until you have checked with your healthcare provider. Continue following your pack unless your provider gives you different instructions, and ask for guidance if vomiting or diarrhea continues or affects more than one active pill.

A missed period does not always mean you are pregnant. However, pregnancy should be considered if you missed a period after not taking your pills correctly. If you miss two periods in a row even though you took Blisovi-Fe 1/20 as directed, contact your healthcare provider so pregnancy can be ruled out before you continue relying on the pill.

Yes. Some medicines can reduce the effectiveness of combined birth control pills. Rifampin and certain seizure medicines are examples mentioned in the prescribing information, and backup contraception may sometimes be needed. Not all antibiotics have this effect. Tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements you use rather than stopping or changing another medicine on your own.
